Swedish Lapland in Winter
Having lived in Sweden for a year during my studies, I had to go to Lapland in winter. I spent almost a week there in December, and it was an incredible experience. It’s really a world apart, everything is white, the sky is different, it feels like a Nordic fantasy story. It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve had the opportunity to see in my life.
I first stayed in Abisko, which is a town well known for contemplating the Northern Lights. This is not a legend, they are clearly visible from this region. Besides hunting for the Northern Lights, there are various activities to do: Look for frozen waterfalls, go sledding, walk on the ice floe (be very careful with this activity), fishing on the frozen lake, ice climbing, sauna… While walking aimlessly in Abisko, I was able to see many small houses of the Sami’s, the indigenous people of this region.
I also stayed in Kiruna, another city in the Far North, where I was able to visit the largest iron mine in the world, the ice hotel, go dog sledding and snowmobiling, visit to a Sami family in their tent (indigenous people of the region) and visit their reindeer farm.
Swedish Lapland in winter is truly a world apart with its extreme climate and destabilizing light. It is a wonderful experience to see a white, magnificent world shining everywhere.
